    Fence Running

    It takes a little effort
    It makes so little sense
To scale the straight and narrow
    To run the wooden fence

Go forth with speed and balance
And you may reach the end
But first you need the courage
    The fence post to ascend

    To celebrate a hero
We run the fence in spring
    While fussing and complaining
    ‘Why do this silly thing?’

    The sheep watch with amusement
    At hobbits wobbling by
    And soon a gaffer tumbles
    Falls headfirst with a cry

The rest of us will follow
We trip and slip and sprawl
The grass, the mud, the bramble
    The nettles break our fall…

    To celebrate a hero
We run the fence in spring
    While cursing old traditions
‘Who thought of this silly celebration when instead we could eat and drink and dance and sing?’
Pycella, Rubellita, Ragwort and 2 others like this.
